WHALE AND DOLPHIN CONFERENCE, BYRON BAY
22ND-24TH SEPTEMBER, 2006- SUMMARY
The 3 day conference was a great success for those involved. It brought together a group of people who had the common interest of Whales and Dolphins but the conference went beyond this common interest and encompassed many related areas. This included peoples amazing stories of being with dolphins and whales and the healing effect for some. There was a lighting of the peace flame and a global connection with prayers and song
Music was featured a lot over the 3 days with a sacred sound concert with local performers and lively Whale Party with the wonderful sounds of the Cetacean orchestra
Local dolphin researcher Liz Hawkins gave a very in depth understanding of the local dolphin pods and their behavior and sounds
Andrew Parker from Newcastle talked about the dolphin and whale interaction there and the good work being done with children with disability and people with depression. This is encouragement for others to participate in dolphin and whale watch programs as potential treatment for mental and physical disability
There was also a visit from the filmmaker, Kim Kinseley (The Gathering) and local whale activists Howie Cook and Dean Jeffereys who had just returned from Fraser Island with great stories of a visit to the Humpbacks there with video of Howie singing to the whales
Sacred geometry was presented by Jain and Jonathan Quintin from New Zealand who showed fantastic moving mandalas inspired by the whales
A visiting Professor from Western Australia told about he potential healing effect of people being with dolphins in the program there being researched by Patricia Athena from Pottsville Beach
Scott Taylor had just returned from America and was able to show us the latest news and programs from there with his plans for his future work
People were captivated with the latest dvds of whale and dolphin activity around the world
It was a feast of vision and sound
Some felt it was life changing, many could feel the love for the Cetaceans and our very urgent need to protect them
It was resolved to meet again at regular intervals and support ongoing programs for further research and protection of Cetaceans
Many thanks go to all who supported the conference and the principles of enriching our lives with further knowledge through research and support
This has heightened our awareness to not only protect Cetaceans in the sea but to find out more about them with ongoing research
